- Avoid exposure to loud noises.
- Move away from sources of noise (e.g. do not stand directly next to a loudspeaker).
- Turn down the volume whenever possible.
- When this is not possible, use hearing protectors.
The impact of noise on hearing
Noise permanently damages the inner ear. The damage is worse the louder the noise and the longer the exposure time. It can cause hearing loss and/or tinnitus (ringing or buzzing).
Noise can affect hearing immediately in some cases, if it is a high-impact noise (e.g. if you are standing close to a rifle shot). In other cases, noise can affect hearing over a longer period of time (e.g. a person who works in noise for several years).
But when is noise too loud?
The sound level (volume) of sounds is measured in decibels (dB). Hearing protection should be worn as soon as noise levels reach 85 dB.
