It is therefore present from a very early age, or even from birth. It can vary in degree (very slight to profound) or type (conductive or sensorineural).<\/p>\n<h2>Prevalence<\/h2>\n<p>One to two babies out of every 1,000 are born with at least moderate permanent hearing loss in both ears. The prevalence can increase to 3 babies out of 1000 births when a stay in intensive care is required. For example, in Quebec, there will be 80,700 births in 2022. This would correspond to around 80 babies with no risk factor for hearing loss, and up to 242 babies if a stay in intensive care is necessary.<\/p>\n<h2>When should a child be referred to audiology?<\/h2>\n<p>Hearing loss is the most common congenital anomaly, which is why hearing screening is recommended at birth. A simple, rapid, non-invasive test that does not require the child&#8217;s cooperation can be used to rule out the presence of significant moderate to profound deafness. Very mild to mild hearing loss, however, may go undetected even with hearing screening.<\/p>\n<p>It would therefore be advisable to repeat a hearing test at the earliest before school entry (3-4 years) to ensure that the auditory system is functioning properly, or before if any doubts arise or if a language disorder is suspected.<\/p>\n<h2>Possible causes<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Genetic or hereditary factors;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>A group of infectious agents (TORCH complex) transmitted from mother to child;<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Toxoplasmosis;<\/li>\n<li>Rubella;<\/li>\n<li>Cytomegalovirus;<\/li>\n<li>Herpes virus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>Problems during birth;<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Decreased oxygen supply during birth;<\/li>\n<li>Low birth weight;<\/li>\n<li>Premature birth.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>As part of a syndrome;<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Problems occurring during the neonatal period;<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Hyperbilirubinemia (jaundice).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li><strong>As part of a malformation of part of the auditory system.<\/strong>\n<ul>\n<li>Atresia or microtia;<\/li>\n<li>Absence or malformation of the eardrum;<\/li>\n<li>Dislocation or malformation of the ossicles.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Possible symptoms<\/h2>\n<p>The Programme Qu\u00e9becois de D\u00e9pistage de la Surdit\u00e9 chez les Nouveaux-N\u00e9s (PQDSN) has now been set up in several hospitals, enabling babies to be screened at birth for hearing loss, so that they can be taken care of as quickly as possible. If the screening test has not been offered in your area, here are some symptoms you may notice in your child:<\/p>\n<h3>For very young children (0 to 2 years)<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Does not react to sounds in the environment;<\/li>\n<li>Does not react to parents&#8217; voices;<\/li>\n<li>Does not turn around when called.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>For older children (2 to 5 years)<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>Requires frequent repetition;<\/li>\n<li>Speaks loudly;<\/li>\n<li>Has difficulty pronouncing or understanding speech.<\/li>\n<li>Asks to turn up the volume on TV\/tablet.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Care and support<\/h2>\n<p>As soon as hearing loss is detected, specialized care is required to reduce the difficulties that hearing loss can cause and facilitate the child&#8217;s overall development. A referral will be made to the rehabilitation center in your area. At this facility, personalized support and service will be offered to help your child develop and implement the most appropriate solutions in collaboration with you. Several types of hearing aids are available to ensure that your child is exposed to the sounds and noises of everyday life. If surgical treatment is possible, this will also be discussed with you at that time.<\/p>\n<h2>Congenital vs. acquired deafness<\/h2>\n<p>Hearing loss can also occur later in a child&#8217;s development, in the first few years of life. It may be caused by a virus such as mumps, meningitis or measles.<\/p>\n<p><strong>It can also have many other causes throughout life, such as :<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Earwax plug ;<\/li>\n<li>Ear infection or retrotympanic fluid (otitis);<\/li>\n<li>Ear drum perforation;<\/li>\n<li>Ear injury;<\/li>\n<li>Head trauma;<\/li>\n<li>Exposure to loud noise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Definition This is a type of deafness that occurs around or during birth.
