It can occur in both children and adults.<\/p>\n<h2>It can be caused by&#8230;<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Genetics or heredity<\/li>\n<li>An abnormality of the outer, middle or inner ear<\/li>\n<li>Certain syndromes<\/li>\n<li>Diseases or infections<\/li>\n<li>Exposure to loud noise<\/li>\n<li>Traumatic brain injury (e.g. blow to the head)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Signs and symptoms<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Easily distracted<\/li>\n<li>Frequent repetition<\/li>\n<li>Increasing TV volume<\/li>\n<li>Being very tired at the end of the day<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty localizing sounds (not knowing where in the environment sounds are coming from)<\/li>\n<li>Difficulty understanding speech in noise<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Unilateral hearing loss in children<\/h2>\n<p>Unilateral hearing loss is thought to affect around 1 in every 1,000 children born. Unilateral hearing loss can be difficult to detect, since hearing is normal in one ear. These children are at greater risk of developing learning and\/or language development difficulties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Tips for communicating with a person with unilateral hearing loss<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Speak face-to-face and avoid placing yourself on the side of the hearing-impaired ear.<\/li>\n<li>Grab the person&#8217;s attention before you start talking.<\/li>\n<li>Reduce background noise (e.g. turn off the TV, music, etc.)<\/li>\n<li>Speak one at a time if you&#8217;re in a group.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>If in doubt, which professional should I consult?<\/h2>\n<p>Consult an audiologist to evaluate your (or your child&#8217;s) hearing. The audiologist will be able to guide you towards possible solutions that are specific to you.
